Most people know the traditional lock and key type of door lock, or even a deadbolt, but there are many more types than that. Here we’ll list a few of the main types, but you would want to go to a professional location such as a Ventura locksmith to get all the information and provide the right system for your home. So let’s start with the most common one that everyone is familiar with.
- Handle Set- This type of lock is one you may be most familiar seeing on a residential home. It is two parts, and on the top part is a round lock, usually a deadbolt, that needs a key inserted to lock or unlock. The bottom part is a handle with a button that you push to open the door. When the top part is locked, the bottom button will not move.
- Mortise Lock- Usually this is described as a flat, rectangular box which is placed into a recessed section of the door and has two faceplates that hold the knobs and keyholes. This lock has both a deadbolt and a latch bolt. The latch on this lock operates both inside and outside unless the outside lock is locked. This lock can be readjusted to fit either left or right handed customers.
- Passage Lockset- This type of lock is usually seen inside home hallways or inside closets and consists of a non-locking knob on each side of the door. This is a locking set used for rooms that don’t really need a lot of privacy and are more just for cosmetic appeal.
- Privacy Lockset- This type you might see on a bathroom door or even a bedroom door in which you want privacy, but aren’t too worried about security. This lock has a button on the inside knob to lock but nothing on the outside, just a pinhole. If there were an emergency, the pinhole could be opened by using a narrow object to unhinge the lock on the other side.
- Keyless Entry System- This type of lock is a more modern style of lock and is designed for advanced home security systems. A keypad or other identifying plate is used to open and lock the system. There are both visual and audible indicators to tell you that the lock is either activated or deactivated. They usually also include a type of sounder alarm if you enter unauthorized or enter the keypad code incorrectly after a certain amount of times.
